Markdown Task Lists

A task list turns any note into a checklist. Because it is plain Markdown, your to-dos live right next to the context they belong to rather than in a separate app.

The syntax

Task lists are a GitHub Flavored Markdown extension supported by most modern editors. Start a list item with a dash, a space, and square brackets:

- [ ] Book venue
- [x] Send invitations
- [ ] Order catering

A space between the brackets means the task is open; an x means it is done. Many editors let you click the checkbox to toggle it, and update the text for you.

Nesting subtasks

Indent items to break a task into steps:

- [ ] Launch newsletter
  - [x] Choose a name
  - [ ] Write first issue
  - [ ] Set up sign-up form

Keep nesting to one or two levels; deeper lists become hard to scan.

Mixing tasks with notes

The real advantage of Markdown task lists is that they sit alongside everything else. A project note can hold background, links and decisions at the top, with the next actions as a checklist underneath. A meeting note can end with an action list. Nothing has to be copied into another tool.

Useful patterns

Keep lists honest

Task lists in GlissNotes

GlissNotes is a free, local-first Markdown notes app for Mac, Windows, the web and Android. Checkboxes render in its rich view, and notes can also carry a status and due date, so a whole note can move across its board from Draft to Done while the checklist inside tracks the individual steps.
